a 3-Day Workshop
Instructor: Elizabeth Ellison

Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday, April 16, 17 & 18

10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each day

$279 Member/ $315 Non-member

Limit: 16 students

This class is intended for beginning to intermediate painters. The focus will be on mastering the basics of watercolor so the students will feel comfortable with the medium and will be able to express themselves in a creative flowing manner. Along with basics, we will explore other possibilities of watercolor such as collage and enhancing with acrylic paint. Painting will be in a relaxed atmosphere where each participant will be supportive of everyone else: we will all enjoy the liberating energy of wet-in-wet painting.

Materials List:

Paper: 140 lb. Arches Cold- pressed watercolor paper, blocks OR sheets. If you bring sheets, they can be torn or cut to smaller sizes. A sheet is generally considered to be 22"x30" and when divided into four sheets, you have a comfortable size to work on. I would try to bring at least 5 or 6 full-size sheets. Whatever size block you prefer is fine. If you buy sheets, you will need a support board--plexiglass or gator board is good--at least 1" on all sides larger than the largest sheet of paper you will paint on, probably 22"x30" 2. Watercolor tube paints: Best is professional grade Winsor and Newton but student grade paints are fine, especially Cotman (made by Winsor and Newton)... Colors: * Alizarin Crimson (in Winsor and Newton [W&N] buy permanent alizarin crimson,. * New Gamboge yellow or gamboge hue or tint * Phthalo Blue (in W&N, buy winsor blue, red shade). * Ultramarine Blue (W&N, green shade). * A premixed purple such as Winsor Violet dioxazine. OPTIONAL COLORS ARE: * Burnt Sienna, * Winsor red (or another warm red such as Scarlet Lake), * Hansa Yellow Light or Aureolin * Cobalt Blue. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE OPTIONAL COLORS ARE TRULY OPTIONAL--THEY ARE ONES YOU MIGHT WANT TO ADD LATER TO THE PRIMARY PALETTE I HAVE SUGGESTED. 3. Brushes.... Kolinsky Sables are best if you can find them inexpensively priced, try Rochester Art Supply (www.FINEARTSTORE.COM) as they often have sets on sale. If so, I would go with whatever is in the set. You may have to add a couple of larger nylon brushes if you do this. Otherwise nylon watercolor brushes will work fine. Good sizes are: * a 9" or 12" round, * 4" or 6" round, * #2 rigger (script brush), * 3/4" or 1" flat brush.... please note the OR--your choice on these sizes. * I use a Japanese Painting Knife #11 but may be difficult to find; any pointed painting knife with a flexible blade works well but you can get along without this item in any case. * I also have a small natural bristle brush - inexpensive flat brush for distorting the bristles when painting 4. Liquid Resist such as Winsor and Newton tinted masking fluid or Incredible white mask. Also a pick up tool for this (a piece of crepe especially made to remove liquid resist). *Bring a small bar of soap to use with the masking to protect your brushes. 5. Palette or mixing tray: John Pike is very good. I use an enamel butcher tray (about 8x8) but then you cannot cover to transport. Just be sure your mixing tray is white and not too small. 6. You will also need: * 2 containers for water, * pencil, * kneaded eraser, * sketch pad, * spray bottle (a fine mist is best), * paper towels, * hair-dryer, * natural sponge (with large pores, such as is sold at hardware stores in the auto cleaning dept.), * box of kleenex, * a sheet or two of medium grain sandpaper, * Reference material such as photos, and/or sketches SOURCES: * CHEAP JOE'S ART STUFF 1-800-227-2788 www.cheapjoes.com * DANIEL SMITH 1-800-426-6740 www.danielsmith.com www.quillemallerv.com For questions, please call ELIZABETH ELLISON WATERCOLORS at 828-488-8782, 10:00am - 4:00pm Mon - Sat.
